Metabolic disease is the largest noncommunicable disease burden in the world, and the one moving fastest.

Diabetes, obesity, metabolic liver disease (MASLD and MASH, formerly known as NAFLD and NASH), chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease are rarely separate conditions in the same person. They share mechanisms, they compound one another, and they are usually managed apart.

Metabolic medicine has advanced further in the last decade than in the three before it. New classes of therapy change the course of diabetes, obesity and kidney disease. A treatment now exists for metabolic liver disease where none did. Continuous glucose monitoring and automated insulin delivery have changed what daily life with type 1 diabetes can look like.

Yet a large proportion of the people who would benefit from these advances are never identified. Many who are identified cannot obtain or afford what exists. And where care is available, it is often organised one condition at a time, across specialties that have few practical ways to coordinate around the same patient.

Our priorities

Where we focus our action.

01

Earlier Detection and Prevention of Progression

A large share of people living with metabolic liver disease, early chronic kidney disease and prediabetes remain undiagnosed. We work on the pathways that identify them in time, and on preventing progression and complications in those already diagnosed.

02

Equitable Access to Metabolic Care

Medicines and technology alike. Access to newer therapies, and to continuous glucose monitoring, automated insulin delivery and the diagnostics that modern metabolic care depends on.

03

Integrated Care Across the Metabolic Continuum

One patient may live with type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic liver disease, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular risk, and be seen by several specialists, each responsible for part of the picture. Few systems are built to hold the whole of it. We work on care organised around the continuum rather than its parts.

04

Capability and Leadership Development

Building the knowledge, skills and leadership metabolic care needs, from detection in primary care through to the specialists who manage complications.
